The Inside Story

By Emma Bezuidenhout, Grade 11

Every item at the Athletics Challenge has a meet record, and this year you will not need to look them up. On the programme, the record to beat now sits right under each item in small capitals, so you can see at a glance whether something special is happening.

Some of the records are old. A few 1500 m marks have stood for more than ten years, and the field event records in the U19 groups are seriously strong. Others are only a season or two old, and our coaches believe at least three of them are within reach on a good afternoon with a little wind behind the sprinters.

Our U17 boys in the 100 m and our U15 girls in the long jump have both been within a few tenths of the mark at practice. Nobody wants to promise a record in a story before the day, but the mood in training says enough.

If a record goes, it shows on the programme straight away, and the Highlights tab keeps count of records broken. Trophies go to the overall school, girls and boys, Victor and Victrix Ludorum in each age group, and the meet records themselves.
